Recently, a university professor wrote a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. He commented that people shouldn't put too much weight on the recently released trends in SRA scores of the state's high school students. The professor went on to describe some of the unanswered questions about the nature and value of assessment. He mentioned that one of the problems MORE

Each and every citizen of “The HipHop Nation” should not only read his book, but also hear this self-proclaimed HipHop citizen dig into the heart of a culture that has lost its shame and has sold its soul to the devilish ambitions of those who profit from the huge sells of a music that glorifies behaviors that are currently destroying the moral fabrics of the community from which it originally came.

Tuskegee, Alabama - Syphilis Experiment
The ugly, inexcusable, racist blot, know as the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male cannot be erase from American history. The stain of the Tuskegee experiment on American history shakes even people who still staunchly believe in their country right or wrong. For others, the horror of what the American government did to hundreds of poor black men with syphilis on the pretense of giving them medical care is reason never ever to trust the government or the medical establishment.
The United States Public Health Service began tracking 399 black men with untreated syphilis and 201 others in a control group in 1932. The purpose was to chart the natural history of the disease without treatment - something that could readily have been learned from centuries of history.
Doctors connected with the study did not even use the term "syphilis." The doctors told those who tested positive for the venereal disease that they had "bad blood." Penicillin was discovered and found to be a cure for syphilis in the 1940's. The black men in the Tuskegee study were not informed, nor were they given the new drug.
Just as reprehensible, no efforts were made to explain the nature of syphilis to the infected men or to caution them about spreading the disease to their wives and other sexual contacts. There were no attempts to trace, warn and treat sexual partners, however great the danger involved.
It wasn't until 1972 - 40 years after the Tuskegee experiment began, more than two decades after penicillin could have cured the men - that newspaper reports shamed the Public Health Service into stopping the "experiment."
Rules for using human beings in medical experiments are supposed to be strict, requiring informed consent and clear understanding of the risk and benefits. In another unrelated medical experiment the government tested new vaccines on retarded children in institutions. Supposedly, experiments like these could not happen again. However, rules are rules, continously evolving and changing, made by greedy, money-grubbing corporations or corrupt judges, incontestably supported by the government and your tax dollars.
Correctional officials see danger in prison overcrowding. Others see opportunity. The nearly two million U.S. citizens behind bars the majority of them nonviolent offenders mean jobs for depressed regions and windfalls for profiteers
“See, you so called Jews – I’m not gonna give you the credit for being one of those that obey God. You portrayed us, you know what images do, that’s why you jumped on Mel Gibson. But you painted us, big lips, red eyes, kinky hair, you put in the movies like that. You mocked our characteristics and made us to hate God’s creation of us. You did that. Hollywood did that….You take our strongest, more courageous black minds, you think we don’t see you? And you put us in Hollywood. You give us television shows, and then we gotta bug our eyes.”

Felipe Coronel, better known as Immortal Technique, is a Hip hop MC and political activist. He is of Afro-Peruvian and Indigenous Peruvian descent and was raised in Harlem, New York. Most of his lyrics focus on political issues. The views expressed in his lyrics are largely a mixture of commentary on issues such as politics, poverty, religion, social class and racism. He also focuses on the harsh resulting realities of crime in the housing projects of New York City's slums.
Although he has been offered a deal with at least one major record label,he has never signed to any. Immortal Technique has voiced a desire to keep control over his production, and has made statements in his music that he is very aware that it is record companies, not the artists themselves, who profit the most from mass production and marketing of music.

An Open Letter to All Music Biz CEOs
An Open Letter for Music Business CEOs to Ignore
An interesting open letter from Vic Steffens of Horizon Music Group...
In the course of doing general business I've been forced to put some serious thought into the overall plight of the industry. It was a great exercise in analyzing where we are, so I decided to document it. Once written, well, why not share it with the folks that REALLY make this all work….the rank and file. Who meet here on the Rope.
Wise Intelligent is the front man for the critically acclaimed and Legendary Hiphop trio known to the world as the “Poor Righteous Teachers”. PRT hail from and represent to the fullest Trenton New Jersey (New Jerusalem). They released five incredible albums throughout their illustrious career. Their groundbreaking first album Holy Intellect was released on Profile records in 1990 and introduced to the world one of the most unique and revolutionary sounds in Hiphop history.
Their equally impressive follow up album Pure Poverty was released in 1991 and cemented their place as one of Hiphop’s most elite groups. Black Business (1993/Profile), New World Order (1996/Profile), and Declaration Of Independence (2001/Exit 7a Records) continued to build on PRT’s standard of lyrical excellence and commitment to raising the consciousness of poor people worldwide.
With his overt sociopolitical/spiritual stance, extremely rare for a West Coast rapper, Kam's gangsta-ridden brand of hardcore rap helped set the mark by which other socially-conscious emcees would be (and still are) judged. Originally affiliated with Ice Cube, Kam's releases appeared sporadically, initially debuting on the Boyz N the Hood soundtrack with his song, "Every Single Weekend". Kam later released his first solo album in early 1993 entitled, "Neva Again"--on East/West Atlantic Records. He immediately became a household/hoodhold-name with his 1st single, "Peace Treaty" which chronicled the Historic Los Angeles GANG TRUCE between the Crips & the Bloods following the 1992 Unrest in L.A. due to the 'Not Guilty' Verdicts handed down to the policemen accused of brutality in the famous Rodney King beating-case.

Perception and reality are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to understanding the hip hop culture and its elements, and trying to live up to the history of a 30-year phenomenon. Thus, making a mark in hip hop has never been more painstaking for male and female rappers alike as they become acclimated to the rules of the game. But if YoNas Da has her way, there will be some changes to the rules.

Where ONE voice can make a difference-But SEVERAL voices can CAUSE a REVOLUTION!
Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
for the rain to gather
for the wind to suck
for the sun to rot
for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
